Why Abstract Art?
I have always enjoyed working from life. When people looks at art they seem to like 'real' paintings the most, probably because it is easy to understand. However, in this age when a camera can record life instantly, what is the roll of art today?
Drawing from life was a crutch, for me, which was difficult to leave behind. For an artists work to evolve they must explore the unknown. This is often an uncomfortable place. Breaking away from self imposed boundaries and other people expectations was difficult but has given me a new found freedom.
In my paintings I try to create an interesting surface. Colours, shapes and composition which work close up and from a distance. Through the constant decision making process of painting, ultimately, the painting will reflect the essence of me.
